Idea for an EU-Armed Forces Model
This is an idea to transform the armed forces of the EU countries into a European Armed Force. The reason is greater efficiency and to strengthen the European unity and identity. This is not a study to the feasibility as the author is in no way equipped with the proper knowledge. This is not seen as a problem because this concept is to merely pose the idea.
This idea is to reduce the initial armies into one organization, consisting of army, navy and air force. The army being ground based and must be located the east, so the Bundeswehr should be the core of this army together with a number of eastern countries. The core of the Navy should be the UK Royal Navy together with a number of north western countries. The air force should be centralized around France air force together with Spain and Italy.
Because it is initially a construction on paper it can be done, once it is accepted the organization will steadily grow as trust grows and benefits become visible. It is a win win situation because it strengthens the EU defense and cut costs.
Of course this can and may not undermine NATO, it is essential that the EU and the USA stick together both in their own interest and the world as a whole.
As a matter of fact it can (eventually) strengthen the EU-NATO co-operation, both politically and militarily since an EU army will be a more powerful and a more efficient army and will lead to less political fragmentation when it comes to military matters.
As most armed conflicts are now low intensity conflicts (LCI's) every country should have an expeditionary force or battle-group for operations abroad, but this has to do with international missions and not with EU defense per se. Meaning that for instance the Netherlands will only have a Navy at full capacity, but only a small army and air force for operations abroad in lci's. This will also secure a minimum knowledge and experience of army sections that have been reduced, many countries will never entirely give up two of the three armed forces anyway.
Another reason to pursue this model is the growing strength of China, both militarily and economically. Obviously this does not mean to one day wage war with China it is merely meant to keep a certain balance. It is also of value in the political and (economic) field, as political power must always be backed up by military power.
As mentioned before to the feasibility, implications and ramifications of this (not entirely new) idea is not the issue. It is the belief in the necessity and feasibility.
